Lavrov - Kerry’s meeting: Beginning a bumpy road or engaging in dirty games?

22 May 2013 07:43

Islam Times - It seems that Russia is making remarkable progress in its policy on Syria, but it is facing diplomatic difficulties in its efforts to push this process forward.

There are reasons that lead us to believe that the White House intends to use all the momentum of the “soft power” in the new pattern of negotiations to achieve the necessary result “in one way or another”. According to the “Chicago Tribune”, Moscow knows if the United States really wants to manage the Syrian crisis, it will not wait for the approval of Russia.

Hence, the fact that the Obama administration is seeking to gain the approval of Russia proves to Moscow that Washington is reluctant, and perhaps Russia believes that Kerry understands it.

At the same time, the United States will use the lack of cooperation with Moscow as another excuse to spoil the situation in Syria even more.

In particular, it is useful not to use Russia to put pressure on Al-Assad to make concessions unilaterally. This has happened, for example, in the nineties of the last century, when Milosevic was controlling the Serbs during the Yugoslav crisis. Then, they will put pressure on Damascus and will exclude Russia.

The White House could easily evade from previous commitments due to the lack of congressional approval, as has happened on several occasions in the past.

In fact, the international conference that is to be held on Syria would bear fruit if all the parties involved in the government participated. The transitional government has the opportunity to restore stability to the country in the event that all the popular and political forces were represented.
