Bahrain sentences 14 defendants to life imprisonment and 21 others to 15 years in prison

Bahrain (Islam Times) – The military prosecutor at the Bahraini Defense Force, Colonel Hoqoqi Youssef Rashid Fleifel, said that the Court of National Safety held its primary session today, on October 3, 2011, where it issued its ruling on the following cases:


Islam Times: The first case: Regarding the incident of a number of outlaws killing an Asian (Pakistani National), Abdul Malik Ghulam Rasool, and that after monitoring him as he left his home in the area of Manama, close to one of the funerals, where he was assaulted with wooden planks and bars and his house was assaulted, and in addition they physically assaulted Jasim Mohammad (Ghulam’s servant). They are also accused of gathering in a public place with intent to cause disturbance and commit crimes. All these crimes took place with a terrorist aim intended at disturbing public order, and endangering the safety and security of the kingdom through assaulting the residents and spreading fear amidst them. The court sentenced all the accused in this case to life imprisonment, and they are:

9 - Tawfiq Jaafar Abdullah Al-Qassab
10 - Hussein Abdulamir Al-Saffar
11 - Abbas Ismail Ghlom
12 - Ali Abdulhussein Haji
13 - Abbas Abdullah Awage
14- Ibrahim Hassan Awage

The court acquitted Al-Sayyid Alawi Al-Aalawi of the charges he was accused of.

Note that the Court has amended the criminal description in this case to be beating to death for purposes of terrorism in accordance with the provisions of Article 336 / 1, 2 of the Penal Code of 1976, Article (1) and Article (2) paragraphs (1.3) and (20) of the law to protect society from terrorist acts of the year 2006.

The second case: regarding the incident of the attempted murder of a military personnel while he was on his way to work when he was assaulted in his private car, stabbed by iron bars and wooden planks, and had his car destroyed. The defendants destroyed buildings at the University of Bahrain, as well as windows, glass doors, and a number of portables (computers, tables, educational tools) and made them un-usable, and that was in a time of strife and commotion. In addition to participation in a number of gatherings (roundabout 22 in Hamad city, University of Bahrain) with the intent to disturb public safety, committing crimes, using violence against security forces at the University of Bahrain, incitement of hatred and contempt towards the regime, and the destruction of one of the cars parked inside the University of Bahrain parking and rendering it un-usable. Such crimes were committed for purposes of terrorism and the spreading of terror among the citizens, students, and their parents and intimidating them, as well as preventing scientific institutions from performing their duties. The court sentenced each of the following to 15 years in prison:

The court acquitted Mustafa Salman Jaafar Ahmad of the charges he was accused of.

The third case:  regarding the incident of the attempted murder of a number of people at the University of Bahrain, by surrounding them in a building (S 20) and setting the building on fire to kill those who are in the top floor, and the destruction of the mentioned building to disable studies in it. In addition to, placing people’s lives and security at risk, stealing computers, possession of flammable containers with intent of use, and public incitement of hate and contempt towards the regime. Such crimes were committed for purposes of terrorism intended to spread terror among the citizens, students and their parents, and prevent scientific institutions from performing their duties. The court sentenced each of the following to 15 years in prison:

5 - Jassim Mohammed Abdullah Mehdi
6 - Yusuf Ahmed Khalifa Abbas

The court also sentenced Hussein Ibrahim Saleh Marzouk to a total of eighteen years.

The court also sentenced all the accused to a fine of (300,349) three hundred and forty-nine thousand.

The military prosecutor stressed that the convicts have the right to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court of Appeals on regular criminal courts based on the Decree Law No. (28)of the year 2011, as well as appeal to the Civil Court of Cassation.
The hearing was attended by representatives of human rights associations, as well as representatives from the media, and a number of the defendants’ and victims’ relatives.
