Syria releases more prisoners

29 Dec 2011 08:25

Islam Times - Syria has released 755 prisoners, who were involved in acts of violence against the government, as part of an Arab League initiative to end months of unrest in the country.

"Seven hundred and fifty-five prisoners who had been involved in the recent incidents in Syria and who did not have Syrian blood on their hands have been released from jail,” the state broadcaster said.

The release came as Arab League observers are visiting Syria to investigate months of violence in the country and to monitor the implementation of an AL initiative, to end the crisis in Syria, and under which all detained protesters are to be freed.

Syrian authorities say more than 4,300 prisoners arrested during the country's unrest have been released since November.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March and according to the UN, 5,000 people have been killed in the country over the past nine months.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ''outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups'' for the unrest that erupted in mid-March, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

In interviews with Israeli news outlets over the past few months, the Syrian opposition members have clearly expressed their vision for the future of Syria and their interest in establishing relations with the Tel Aviv regime.

However, Syrian people have repeatedly expressed solidarity with the government. Figures show that during the past weeks, about 12 million people have demonstrated in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
