Ahmed Jibril leaves Damascus after clashes in Yarmouk Palestinian camp

16 Dec 2012 10:26

Islam Times - The head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) has reportedly left Damascus following clashes with the militants in Syria at the Palestinian refugee camp of al-Yarmouk.

Reports say Ahmed Jibril and his son have left Yarmouk, located in the Taqaddum neighborhood in southern Damascus, for the country’s Mediterranean city of Tartous.

The move followed almost 12 days of heavy clashes during which the foreign-backed militants attacked the refugee camp, which is home to thousands of displaced Palestinians.

Syrian forces along with Palestinians in Yarmouk have been fighting back to push the militants out of the camp.

The PFLP-GC is one of the strongest Palestinian groups in the refugee camp.

Yarmouk and the districts surrounding it have borne the brunt of the turmoil in Syria over the past months. In September, at least 20 people were killed when mortar shells landed in the Palestinian refugee camp.

Many people, including large numbers of Syrian security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011.
