Israeli troops rearrest former Palestinian prisoner in West Bank

11 Apr 2013 07:37

Islam Times - The Israeli military has rearrested a former Palestinian inmate and hunger striker in the occupied West Bank, local sources say.

According to witnesses, Israeli regime forces raided the home of Thaer Halahla in the West Bank city of Ramallah early on Wednesday, arresting him forcibly nearly a year after his release.

Locals further said Israeli troops inflicted damages to Halahla’s home and seized his cellphone.

Halahla’s wife was also taken to hospital for treatment due to what she described as “the brutalityā€¯ of the attack.

Reports also indicated that Israeli forces raided neighboring apartments in the same building and searched them.

Thaer Halahla, 35, was held in the Tel Aviv regime’s custody without charge for about two years until June 2012.

While in prison, Halahla staged a 77-day hunger strike to protest against his detention and Israeli prison conditions last year.

The Palestinian man has been reportedly arrested eight times by the Israeli regime and has spent six and a half years in administrative detention without charge.

The administrative detention, often implemented by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian population, is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge, allowing regime forces to make arrests without formal charges for up to six months. However, such orders can be renewed indefinitely for up to six months at a time.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have been subject to human rights violations such as the use of torture during interrogations by prison authorities.
