US military begins questioning Bergdahl on his capture

7 Aug 2014 07:46

Islam Times - The US military has formally launched an investigation into how and why Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl left his base in Afghanistan in 2009, a move which resulted in his capture by the Taliban.

On Wednesday, the military began questioning Bergdahl on the circumstances that led to five years in captivity by the Taliban.

Major General Kenneth Dahl grilled Bergdahl at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where he has been kept for the past several weeks. Dahl is a two-star general with Afghanistan combat experience.

Authorities are seeking answers on whether the Army sergeant intended to desert when he walked off a military base in Afghanistan in 2009.

The US military earlier concluded he walked away from his base without authorization ahead of his capture, but has stopped short of accusing him of desertion.

Bergdahl was released from Taliban captivity on May 31 in exchange for five Taliban prisoners being held at Washington’s military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The 28-year-old's release raised a mighty hue and cry in the United States after some of his former colleagues charged that he was captured after deserting his post on June 30, 2009.

Bergdahl's some emails published by US media show that the soldier got disillusioned with the US-led war on Afghanistan and was struggling with his conscience and that his father told him to follow his conscience and leave the army.
