Is Yemeni President Hadi calling for civil war?

20 Sep 2014 06:48

Islam Times - According to reports from the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi would have called on able Yemeni to take up arms and oppose the advances of the Houthis.

The Houthis, who are led by non-other than powerful tribal leader Abdel-Malek Al Houthi have managed over the past weeks to surround the capital and impose a semi-siege onto the government through demonstrations and tribal encampments.

Just as media have reported violent clashes in Al Jawf, a province located north of Sana’a against the Houthis and pro-government Islamist militias, President Hadi would have urged his fellow Yemenis to take matters into their own hands.

Such call was met by harsh criticism as it was understood as a direct call for civil war.

President Hadi has been criticized over the past weeks as he has appeared unable to deal with the mounting crisis, putting Yemen in a difficult impasse.

Interestingly Al Houthi’s popularity has increased in parallel to President Hadi’s unpopularity.

As Yemen further titters on the edge of the abyss, officials have warned that war is looming.
