Kerry discusses Kobani situation in Cairo

13 Oct 2014 09:56

Islam Times - US Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani, despite his earlier remarks that the condition is not Washington's immediate concern.

"Obviously we are all very concerned about the reports of gains in Kobani and we're closely monitoring the situation. In fact, we're not just monitoring it, we've been deeply engaged with strikes in the last days and today there were more strikes," Kerry told reporters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on Sunday.

The top US diplomat said formerly that saving Kobani is not among the strategic objectives of the US-led coalition against ISIL.

“As horrific as it is to watch in real time what is happening in Kobani, you have to step back and understand the strategic objective,” Kerry said Wednesday.

In his Sunday’s remarks, Kerry claimed that it would take time to bring the coalition fully together to confront the terrorists, saying that more than sixty partners have committed to join the US effort to defeat ISIL.
