Putin claims victory in presidential election

5 Mar 2012 06:41

Islam Times - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin claims victory in the country’s presidential election after preliminary results from more than half of the polling stations across the country showed he has secured a clear majority.

“I promised you we would win, we won. Glory to Russia,” Putin said on Sunday, addressing a gathering of more than 100,000 supporters waving the Russian flag outside the Kremlin in the capital Moscow.

Referring to the Sunday polls, he took pride in having “won in honest and fair combat.”

The tally so far shows that Putin has received 64.39 percent of the votes, while his main rival, the Communist Party chief, Gennady Zyuganov, has garnered 17.13 percent.

Mikhail Prokhorov from pro-business political party, Right Cause, and Vladimir Zhirinovsky of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) have respectively received 6.79 and 6.7 percent.

Putin served as president for two consecutive terms from 2000 to 2008.

The opposition claims voter fraud and has vowed to step up the already three-month-old protests against Putin.
