Islam Times - 'Egyptians' call for speedy trial is just'

Islam Times - The Egyptian government is deliberately delaying its prosecutions of former officials who served under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, says an analyst.

In an interview with Press TV, Yehia Ghanem, editor of Al-Ahram newspaper, talks about the dichotomy of speedy trials for former Egyptian officials.

Press TV: There are rumors that former President Hosni Mubarak is influencing the government from outside the country through Omar Suleiman. Are these rumors true and is this the reason why the people are still protesting in Liberation Square and want Mubarak and his aides to be put under speedy trial?

Ghanem: If I heard you right, I don't believe this is true. Of course, this is not true at all. I believe what's happening on the streets, and more specifically in Tahrir Square, is the result of many reasons.

First, there's still what the public perceives as slow trials of these former officials in Mubarak's regime. I stress about what the public perceives as a deliberate slowing of the rate of the trials.

As for this point, I believe the public is right and wrong at the same time. They are right to ask the government to speed up the trials.

But it's not 100 percent right because such trials should take their time so that we can have a legal ground when trying the government's former officials. Without these trials, the state wouldn't have the legality to ask for the money back; for instance, just like in the criminal charges against the four officials accused of killing the revolutionaries.

As for these points, specifically, I totally agree with the public that those kinds of trials should speed up a little bit.
