Israel renews anti-Iran threats of war

12 Feb 2012 09:33

Islam Times - Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has once again threatened Tehran with military strike over the Islamic Republic’s peaceful nuclear program.

“Israel has a large selection of ways, when the world of international sanctions fails to persuade Iran to halt its nuclear program,” the Israeli official told UN envoys in New York on Thursday.

Earlier this month, the Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said if Western sanctions against Iran fail to stop its nuclear program, military action against the country must be put on agenda.

Referring to the remarks of Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about wiping Israel off the map, Lieberman called for the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) action against Tehran.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program. Washington and Tel Aviv have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the "option" of a military strike against its atomic facilities.

The West has also used this pretext to push for the imposition of four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions and a series of unilateral actions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
