U.S. Deportations at record high under Obama Administration

Islam Times , 7 Oct 2010 05:37

Islam Times - As the Obama administration face intense pressure to get tough on immigration laws, over 390,000 illegal immigrants have been deported since last year – a record high in U.S. immigration deportation history.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says half of those deported are convicted criminals, while the other half were fugitives from immigration courts or who recently crossed the border illegally. Napolitano goes on to point out the figures regarding the criminals being deported reflect the Obama administration’s shift to shedding light on “removing those who pose public safety threats to our community.”

This ‘shift’ Napolitano is referring to comes after years of Obama’s clear stance on immigration issues which have him saying that “it’s not practical to just ship back 12 million undocumented immigrants,” instead he believes in “a pathway to citizenship for immigrants” –a path he might have forgotten to work towards.

The American Immigrant Lawyers Association is questioning the immigrant criminal figures the White House is releasing, insinuating those numbers are coming from an already “very dysfunctional system.”

Researchers who study federal statistics say they are currently unable to dig into any immigration figures to look into the criminal and non-criminal immigration deportation numbers. They say immigration authorities blocked them for the first time from receiving detailed data – raising more questions on released White House data.
