Israelis take to streets for social justice protests‎

30 Oct 2011 06:54

Islam Times - Since September 3rd, the protests has ceased and tent cities were dismantled. Three weeks later came the Trajtenberg committee report recommending an additional 196000 settler housing units over the next 5 years.

Islam Times: However the timing of the report coincided with the Palestinian bid at the UN and Netanyahu's attention shifted there. Then came the prisoner exchange swap with Hamas and this according to analysts, seemed to better equip Netanyahu to deal with the protesters. But the renewed protests came in defiance of Netanyahu's rising approval rating as a recent poll has suggested.

Tonight's protest, according to the organizers, came to send a message to Netanyahu and his cabinet that the Trajtenberg recommendations do not go far enough to meet the rising costs of living and the housing crisis.

In Tel Aviv, reports estimated the crowd to be at 20,000 while in Jerusalem Al Quds over 2000. In Be'er Sabea, however, protests were cancelled due to the exchange of fire between Israel and Gaza.

Though not with the same summer vigor the social justice protests are back, and it remains to be seen if the protesters will be able to dictate a change or the rising tensions with Gaza will overshadow their agenda.
