France cautions against military strike on Iran

9 Feb 2012 07:16

Islam Times - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has warned against the repercussions of a military aggression against the Islamic republic of Iran, aimed at halting Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

Speaking at a Wednesday dinner party hosted by France’s major Jewish organization, CRIF (Representative Council of France's Jewish Associations) in the French capital city of Paris, also attended by Francois Hollande, his major rival in the country’s presidential election in April, Sarkozy emphasized that the solution to Iran’s nuclear issue “is never military."

"The solution is political, the solution is diplomatic,” the French president argued, highlighting, however, the West’s sanction policies against Iran.

Sarkozy noted that the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program could be resolved as “the irreparable is not carried out” with regard to Tehran’s nuclear case.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program. Washington and Tel Aviv have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the "option" of a military strike against its atomic facilities.

The West has also used this pretext to push for the imposition of four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions and a series of unilateral embargoes against the Islamic Republic.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to use nuclear technology for peaceful use.
