Kurdistan security forces arrest 7 and assault 17 journalists in 48 hours

Baghdad (Islam Times) – On Sunday, the Metro Centre for the Defense of Journalists Rights in the Kurdistan region of Iraq announced that the security forces in the region arrested 7 journalists and assaulted 17 others during the past 48 hours.


A member of the Board of Trustees at the Metro Centre, Awat Ali, said that the assaults and violations against journalists and the freedom of the press and the law of journalism are repeating with the political crises in the Kurdistan region. He clarified those arrested were from different regions of the Dhuk municipality.

He added that the cities of Erbil, Al-Salmaniya, and Dhuk have witnessed violations against 17 journalists that were practicing their jobs in covering the events witnessed by these regions. He pointed out that unknown gunmen set fire to six offices belonging to the Kurdistan Islamic Union during the past two days.
