China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported on Saturday that the man, identified only by his surname Cao, is from the eastern city of Qingdao and is awaiting trial.

According to the report, he took photos of the aircraft carrier base in Qingdao for a man, who had claimed to be the editor of a military magazine, and received “a large sum of cash.”

Cao had also reportedly entered a military airport to take photos and sent them to the editor.

The arrest comes as more Internet users in China are being recruited by foreign spies to collect intelligence on military affairs.

“In recent years, the number of young Internet users like Cao who look for jobs and make friends on the Internet, been subverted by foreign espionage and intelligence agencies and accepted instructions from them to collect intelligence on military targets, has been increasing,” the report said citing unnamed counterintelligence officials.

Earlier in August, a Chinese student had been arrested on charges of selling intelligence material to foreigners, while in May an individual was sentenced to 10 years in jail for giving secret documents and photographs, including military journals and information, about bases in the southern province of Guangdong to a foreign spy.
