Mubarak regime back in power in Egypt

Mubarak regime back in power in Egypt
Q: Let’s look at the significance of the inauguration and what is to come afterwards. Do you think that [Abdel Fattah] el-Sisi will have the legitimacy that he desires in Egypt?

Al-Kabani: Actually Sisi will never have the legitimacy in Egypt because he came to power on the back of the tanks after the military coup of the 3rd of July [2013], but what is ironic is that the man asking and calling for austerity and we all saw today the imperial celebration and the imperial extravagant ceremony for his inauguration as a president. And we can see also, the state propaganda machine talking about his inauguration as if it’s a historic occasion for the first time in Egypt, a sitting president to handed power to an elected president.

First, he is not a sitting president. He is a transitional president appointed by the head of the military coup and he was sitting in that seat for a temporary period until Sisi prepared the public opinion for him to steal power. Also, the big lie, it’s not the first time, because after the death of [Gamal Abdel] Nasser, the speaker of the parliament was the sitting transitional president and he handed power to [Anwar] Sadat. So, they lie and think that people have no memory and they exaggerate and try to fool the Egyptian people and the public opinion.

So to answer your question in short again, he will never have legitimacy because half of the people are protesting against him coming to power, because he took one thing and does another, because today for example, was a day of causing a loss for the Egyptian economy of two billion Egyptian pounds, plus the millions spent on the Egyptian presidential palaces to refurbish them and the millions which were spent today on all this false ceremony. So, all these billions of pounds should have been spent to cure the chronic problem of the Egyptian society, rather than this extravagant show and celebration for his inauguration.

Q: Looking at the economic situation, because you just alluded to a couple of points that obviously had an effect on the economy itself. Do you think that he will be able to help turn around the economic situation in Egypt? We have seen that states like Saudi Arabia now are coming and saying that they will support the country financially? And tell me with that support coming out of Riyadh, what does that mean for Egypt itself?

Al-Kabani: No country improved its economy relying on begging and foreign aid. This never happened in history. That’s why Sisi thanked today two people; the king of Saudi Arabia and the transitional president and he forgot to thank the Egyptian people who brought him to power, according to his lies. But no government and no president can change the economy and solve the economic problem. It is the people of the country who can do that. The rule of the government is to establish democracy, equal opportunity, fight corruption, for the people to build their economy and build the future.

So, Sisi will not have a magic stick and the magic power to change the economy or what we are going to see is the Mubarak regime back and the wealth of the country will be looted by the same corrupt business people around the president and the rest of the people will suffer from the corrupt regime which is coming back with new faces to Egypt now. So, no economy could be corrected or improved without real democracy, which create a healthy environment for the country to progress and develop.
