Petraeus: Attack on Iran Could Backfire
The Chief of US Central Command Gen. David Patraeus stated that any attack on Iran could backfire. The reason behind this is that nationalistic tendencies would be instigated. He said: “It’s possible (an attack) could be sued to play to nationalist tendencies.”

Petraeus said: “There is certainly a history, in other countries, of fairly autocratic regimes almost creating incidents that inflame nationalist sentiment. So that could be among the many different, second, third, or even fourth order effects (of an attack).”

Gulf countries have recently been increasing their missile defense systems with the aid of the United States government. This commander stated that it had nothing to do with Iran, despite all of the media attention that has been given to this issue. He is quoted as of saying: “(this is) not something sparked by events in Iran in recent months.”
