The US soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device outside
Samawa, 250 kilometers south of Baghdad, the US occupation army said in a statement, which did not give further details.

The death bring to 4,313 the number of American troops killed since the 2003 US-led invasion, according to an AFP count based on the independent website icasualties.org.

Meanwhile, in an attack in the Al-Husseiniyah district of northeast Baghdad, one US occupation soldier and two civilians were injured and a Humvee was damaged by a bomb targeting a US patrol in the area, the police and US army said.

And a senior Iraqi judge and his two bodyguards were hurt by a roadside bomb as they drove through Mosul, according to police.

On Monday, General Ray Odierno, the top US commander in Iraq, told reporters his forces would leave Mosul by the end of the month, despite reservations a few months earlier over violence levels in the city.
