Osman: Maaz Al-Khatib’s initiative is “narrow-minded” and has put a stick in the wheel
Islam Times - Dr. Shawkat Osman, Chairman of the Democratic Union Party of Syria, (one of the new parties that were licensed in accordance with the new law of parties in Syria), considered that the initiative of the head for the coalition of Syrian opposition and revolutionary forces, Sheikh Maaz Al-Khatib, is “narrow-minded” and has put a stick in the wheel, and described Maaz Al-Khatib as knowing nothing in politics.
Osman: Maaz Al-Khatib’s initiative is “narrow-minded” and has put a stick in the wheel
Dr. Othman in an interview with the “Asia News agency” said that the laws will be issued in the coming period according to which the powers of the security services will be determined and their work will be adjusted, adding that the party will present a complete plan on the security services in the national dialogue conference. He also pointed out that some of the items contained in the plan have been presented to the government and it approved them.

The following is the full text of the interview:

-    You are one of the participants in the national dialogue meeting held in Tehran; do you think Iran was neutral in holding this meeting and in the invitations amid being accused of siding with the Syrian regime?

Of course it was neutral, and the Iranian officials spared no effort for the success of this meeting, which have had an Arab and international attention. The aim of the Iranian commendable government from this meeting was to make various Syrian parties sit at the same table, including figures, bodies, and parties in the external opposition, in order to develop steps to get out of the Syrian crisis through the political dialogue.

-    What do you think are the main ways to achieve a successful Syrian national dialogue?

First it makes those abroad come to Syria, including the oppositions that are funded and supported by the West, and I think confidence should be installed between the government and the external opposition, since the government opened up on them through the call for dialogue and gave them guarantees not to be subjected to arrest.

-    But there are those who believe that these are insufficient guarantees and do have several remarks, what do you think?

In my opinion, when someone as President Bashar Al-Assad speaks and gives guarantees for the abroad opponents as long as they agree to dialogue and reject violence and the armed action, this implies certainly that these guarantees are not for discussion by security sides or by other ones.

We told them that the government is serious about finding a way for them to enter the country and come to the dialogue table. If the external opposition cares about Syria as it claims, it must come to the dialogue table.

-    Sheikh Maaz Al-Khatib, the head of the coalition for the Syrian opposition and revolutionary forces, proposed an initiative and gave a deadline for the implementation of one of its items that was over at the beginning of the week, what is your position on it?

We in the party believe that his initiative does not have a wide horizon as he claims, but it is “narrow-minded” and came to put a stick in the wheel. He threatened the Syrian State when he said, “All the prisoners must be released giving (last) Sunday as a deadline otherwise etc…”, and this is a rejected and unacceptable way of talking.

Maaz Al-Khatib is a religious figure and is incapable in the political discourse and knows nothing about politics, and I have said this several times before. Al-Khatib would be mistaken when he threatens the State by proposing the conditions for the implementation of what he called an “initiative” launched by him, and I tell him, “Fear Allah when dealing with the people”.

We say to him come to the dialogue table and this is better than threatening that if the women come out of prison or do not come out of it, and on the dialogue table you can propose what you want, ask what you want, and wonder whatever and whoever you want. The door is open to you and to all the Syrian abroad dissidents in order to come and sit at the table of dialogue.

-    But the external opposition believes that it is representing the Syrian people, and few countries have recognized it?

They are as I have indicated backed by the West, and they talk about themselves as if they were nobles of Mecca and claim to be representing the Syrian people. In fact, this is not true, is unacceptable, and is totally rejected, and we in the internal opposition have the right to say that we are “Mecca’s nobles”, for they are paid and are stealing hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars and are relying on the foreign intervention and the support for the armed terrorism to resolve the crisis.

We are, however, relying on co-existence, the sharing of a piece of bread, and helping each other in everything. We do not think of killing one another, or stealing each other, for these are acts far from consciousness. Those people or the so-called the “Free Army” or the “Victory Front” have no consciousness. I say to all of them leave the weapons away, reject the external interference, and come for dialogue.

-    You are saying that the “Free Army” lacks awareness, yet we are seeing them through the media controlling new places and sites, including recently the “Euphrates Dam”. Hence, how do you explain this?

The essential aim of controlling the Euphrates Dam or any area of the country by them is to drag the Syrian Arab army backed by the air force to hit the sites of the “terrorists” in these places, and they also want to hit the country’s infrastructure as much as possible. However, the Syrian Arab army has rectified this issue since the beginning of the events, and most of the accusations against the Syrian Arab Army in this regard are completely untrue and false, and the “Free Army” unequivocally stands behind all the acts of sabotage, intimidation and destruction of the infrastructure of the country along with the groups affiliating with it, in addition to the “Victory Front”.  In fact, this “free army” is nothing more than terrorist militias that are directed by some of those who refrained and betrayed i.e. the officers and behind them regional and Western intelligence services.
