Peshmerga move to retake Mosul
Less than 10 miles away, about 80 fighters from the radical Sunni group Islamic State were holed up inside a secondary dam. The area was so heavily booby-trapped and mined that Kurdish forces struggled to advance.

But by the end of the second day of their ground offensive, backed by Iraqi troops and U.S. airstrikes, the Kurdish forces had wrested back control of the fragile dam and driven out militants from the group also known as ISIS or ISIL. Kurdish officials said their success here may pave the way for a broader offensive to reclaim territory in the country's north, including the important city of Mosul.

Gen. Barzani and other Kurdish officials in the area said recapturing the dam two weeks after Islamic State seized it was critical to the security of northern Iraq, including the Kurdish region, and tens of thousands of its displaced residents.

After capturing Mosul in June, Islamic State pushed eastward toward the border of Iraq's Kurdish region. The threat they posed to the Kurdish capital Erbil was a key motivator for the U.S. to join in the fight on Aug. 8, when American airstrikes began.

The campaign for the dam was the most highly coordinated operation involving U.S., Kurdish and Iraqi forces since American troops left Iraq in 2011.
