Every single republican in the Senate voted for him and every democrat voted against him. Thus, he was not able to secure the two-third vote that he needed to succeed.

McLeroy said: “I’m disappointed dadgummit, I’m disappointed. But, I tell you it has been an honor and privilege to serve as chairman for the almost two years I’ve done it…I am very proud of what the board has done in these past two years.”

The controversies have been over curriculum fights for science standards and a Bible course. The opposition has claimed that McLeroy tried to force his religious beliefs upon the school curriculum.

This anti-religious tone was confirmed by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Steve Ogden, republican. He said: “There is a certain amount of innuendo in the criticism of Dr. McLeroy. To a certain degree it’s a slur.” He added: “The perception amongst a significant number of Texans is if you are a conservative, if you believe in the infallibility and the literacy of the Bible, there’s no need to apply to be on the State Board of Education.”
