Speaking at an end-of-the-year news conference on Friday, US President Barack Obama once again called for the removal of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in order for the country to have peace and stability.

"I think that Assad is going to have to leave in order for the country to stop the blood, for all the parties involved to be able to move forward in a nonsectarian way," Obama said.

The US president described the elected government of President Assad as illegitimate, saying bringing peace to the war-torn country is impossible “unless the government is considered legitimate by a majority of Syrians.”

Dankof said, “So we have Barack Obama once again reaffirming that the United States is committed to regime change when it comes to the Syrian government.”

“This is not only wrong, this is not only illegal, it’s also incompetence that the president of the United States to be talking about this within 24 to 48 hours of his Secretary of State John Kerry telling the Russians and telling the world publically that the United States is not involved and would not be involved from now on in trying to have regime change in Syria,” he added.

“And the president of the United States is publicly contradicting his own secretary of state on this subject within a 24 to 48 hour time-frame, that’s an indication that these guys are not simply criminals, they are absolute incompetents,” he stated.

“Where is this incompetence leading us?” the analyst asked. “It is leading us, as Pat Buchanan tells us, to a potential outbreak of a third world war. His most recent article on this subject is Syria and all of the irresponsible statements made by these various Republican presidential contenders.”

“Buchanan tells us what is very, very obvious and that is for these people running for the presidency now, who want to put American boots on the ground in Syria, who want a no-fly zone in Syria and continue to make bellicose, threatening statements about President Putin and Russia. It doesn’t take much to figure out that Pat Buchanan is absolutely correct,” Dankof said.

“These people are playing around with matches and with gasoline and with nitroglycerin in what may very well be the beginning of World War III,” he noted.

Dankof went on to say that a world war over Syria “will involve nuclear weaponry, chemical weaponry, and biological weaponry that as both Buchanan and Paul Craig Roberts understand could lead to the end of humanity on this planet.”
