US Republican Senator Rand Paul on Wednesday warned Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about going to war with Iran, reminding him that he has no “permission” to do so.

The Kentucky lawmaker suggested that the Trump administration might be preparing to take military action against Iran.

Pompeo appeared on Capitol Hill to defend the Trump administration’s budget request for fiscal year 2020.

Asked if the administration was using a Congress’ 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force to start a war with Iran, the US top diplomat said, “I’d prefer to leave that to lawyers.”

Martin, a former congressional staffer based in Scottsdale, Arizona, said “Senator Rand Paul’s comment that the administration has no permission to go to war with Iran is absolutely correct. In fact there has been no permission to engage in great many of the military operations including assisting Saudi Arabia with its genocidal war in Yemen.”

“The Trump administration like the Barack Obama administration has utilized the 2001 authorization to use force which was procured by the George W. Bush administration immediately after 9/11. This is wholly unconstitutional and an abrogation of war power authority by the US Congress,” he stated.

“I am very concerned that there is some sort of planning in the works with those neocons that have taken over the Trump foreign policy. With the reelection of Bibi Netanyahu it could be that the United States could green-light some sort of attack by the Israelis and Iran. And of course the US will always support the Israelis because of significant strength of the Jewish lobby and Zionist lobby and the evangelicals in the United States,” he said.

“I am not seeing a situation where the United States will mobilize troops in the Middle East. They have a basing problem. I do not think Iraq would allow US troops to base in Iraq for an attack on Iran, but there are other venues for attacks on Iran…from Afghanistan,” he noted.

“It’s scary times, unstable times. Donald Trump is an unstable individual… Donald Trump’s sole objective is to make Israel great again, and to possibly create a Greater Israel and to make sure that there are no checks and balances on the Zionist regime in the Middle East,” the analyst concluded.
