The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that Washington imposed sanctions on Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza to pressure President Maduro to step down.

Lajos Szaszdi, Latin America expert, said that the US is seeking to bring down the Venezuelan government through imposing sanction on its Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza.

“This is not surprising, but it is part of what I consider a hybrid war being waged by the United States to bring down the government of President Nicolas Maduro,” Szaszdi noted, adding that “one of the ingredients of the hybrid war is to impose sanctions as a way to build up pressure against the Venezuelan government.”

Meanwhile, Aline Piva, journalist and political analyst, said that Venezuela is important for internal politics of the United States; so, “the Trump administration is trying to use Venezuela to get [political] leverage for the 2020 elections.”
