Syria dismisses AL power transfer deal
A Syrian official source condemned the AL's new proposal as a violation of Syria's sovereignty and part of a conspiracy against the Syrian nation.

AL foreign ministers proposed a plan on Sunday, calling on President Bashar al-Assad to hand over power to his top deputy and set up a new unity government, which includes the Syrian opposition.

The plan envisioned, “The formation of a national unity government within two months, with the participation of both the regime and the opposition, headed by an individual, previously agreed upon, and whose mission would be the implementation of the terms of the Arab League's plan,” said Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who is also the current head of the AL.

The Arab body decided to extend its observer mission in Syria for another month as well.

The observer mission has been in Syria since December 26, 2011 and is in charge of monitoring the implementation of the AL resolution to end the unrest in the country.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March, with demonstrations being held both against and in favor of President Bashar al-Assad.

Damascus says “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” are responsible for the unrest and it is being orchestrated from abroad.

On January 11, President Assad joined thousands of government supporters in the capital Damascus and said Syria will “undoubtedly triumph over foreign conspiracies.”
