Islam Times - Egyptian electoral commission confirms Morsi-Shafiq run-off

Islam Times - The Egyptian electoral commission has confirmed that the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi and former Egyptian premier Ahmed Shafiq will face off in the country’s presidential runoff next month.

On Monday, electoral commission chief Faruq Sultan announced the results of Egypt’s historical presidential vote, saying Morsi had won 5,764,952 votes, while Shafiq garnered 5,505,327, AFP reported.

The two frontrunners are to enter the run-off set for June 16 and 17.

Hamdeen Sabbahi came in third place, while Abdel Moneim followed behind. Amr Moussa, a former foreign minister and ex-head of the Arab League, also came in fifth.

The voter turnout on May 23 and 24 was around 50 percent, electoral commission officials said.

Earlier this week, the Muslim Brotherhood urged Egyptians to rally behind their presidential candidate in the June run-off with rival Shafiq, warning the country would be in danger if the former Egyptian premier won.

However, Shafiq has praised the "glorious" revolution that overthrew Mubarak and vowed that there will be no "recreation" of the old regime if he is elected.
