North Korea ready to restart six-party nuclear talk: Cambodia

15 Jul 2012 07:30

Islam Times - Cambodian Foreign Ministry says that North Korea has confirmed its readiness to rejoin the stalled six-party talks, aimed at denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-Chun "clearly stated that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is ready to participate in the six-party talks", Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said.

Pak Ui-Chun has reportedly made the comments during a meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong in Phnom Penh on Saturday.

Kuong added that Ui-Chun "did not talk about conditions during the meeting" and "Cambodia welcomes the positive step."

The meeting between the Cambodian and North Korean foreign ministers came after an Asian security gathering in Phnom Penh during which North Korea said it needs atomic weaponry to deter a US nuclear threat.

The six-party talks, involving North Korea, China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States, stalled in 2009 when Pyongyang walked out in protest against a new round of UN sanctions following the nuclear and missile tests by the North.

Pyongyang accuses Washington of plotting with regional allies to topple the country's government.
