Pakistan’s judiciary orders action over obscenity on TV channels

Islam Times - The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) chairman to take measures to stop obscenity on Country’s TV channels.


While hearing an application filed against obscenity aired on TV channels, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry observed on Monday that TV channels are “spreading vulgarity” and PEMRA is doing nothing to prevent it.

A three-member bench including Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case.

The Court fined 17 different TV channels over vulgarity, CJ added.
Later, the court directed Chairman PEMRA to halt all the vulgar content on any Television channel and present a report within a week.

The chief justice cited some offensive programs and advertisements and said that one find it difficult to watch them with family.

He also said that some of them were aired even during Iftar time, which should be avoided.
