PKK kidnaps Turkish opposition lawmaker: Reports

13 Aug 2012 08:53

Islam Times - Reports say the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has kidnapped a member of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

A CHP spokesman, whose name was not mentioned in the reports, said on Sunday that the PKK had abducted Huseyin Aygun on a road between the eastern towns of Ovacik and Tunceli.

The PKK, however, has not commented on the incident.

The development comes a few days after a Turkish trooper was killed and seven others injured during an attack, allegedly carried out by the PKK members in the western province of Izmir on August 9.

The PKK launched an armed campaign against Turkey in 1984 in a quest to gain independence for the Kurds living in the southeast of the country.

Two Turkish forces were also killed and 10 others injured in clashes between the PKK members and government troops in the southeastern province of Hakkari on July 30.
