Turkish police clash with Syrians seeking shelter in Hatay: Reports

15 Aug 2012 11:50

Islam Times - Reports say Turkish police have clashed with Syrians seeking shelter at an area in Turkey’s southern province of Hatay close to the Syrian border.

Turkish media said on Tuesday that two Turkish police officers were also injured in the clashes.

Similar incidents have also been reported in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa near the Syrian border over the past few days.

At least seven Syrians were injured in a similar confrontation in Sanliurfa in July.

On July 25, a Turkish official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Ankara would close Turkey’s border crossings with Syria until further notice.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
