6 killed, 62 injured in Syria-related clashes in Lebanon

22 Aug 2012 07:17

Islam Times - At least six people have been killed and 62 others injured in renewed clashes between the supporters and opponents of the Syrian government in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

The clashes broke out on Monday and continued into Tuesday night, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Lebanese army tightened security in the city and raided the hideouts of armed men involved in the fighting, the army said in a statement.

The army units are still tracking down the gunmen and have managed to seize a quantity of machine guns, hand grenades, ammunition and military equipment during the raids, the statement further read.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Tuesday warned against “sliding into the fires raging around Lebanon” and urged Tripoli residents “not to be dragged into battles that only lead to death and devastation.”

Tripoli has been the scene of similar clashes between the two groups over the past months. Several people have been killed and injured in the clashes and the fighting has forced Tripoli residents to leave the volatile neighborhoods.
