UK govt. still pays fat cat bonuses

28 Aug 2012 07:32

Islam Times - Despite the government’s pledge to crack down on fat cat public sector bonuses, the bonus payments have continued in Britain with over 100 senior civil servants receiving payouts of £10,000 or more in 2011.

The bonus payments triggered a furious backlash from campaigners who called for an end to the practice at a time of austerity measures and pay freezes.

It was revealed that ten out of 100 civil servants have received bonuses of over £30,000. These included one Ministry of Defense official who received nearly £100,000 on top of his £160,000 salary.

This is while that the Chancellor, George Osborne, have fixed salaries of workers around the country for two years with some enduring below inflation rises.

“Taxpayers will be justifiably angry that government departments and quangos are undermining the Chancellor’s edict by handing out these massive bonuses”, said Matthew Sinclair, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance.

“Some of the eye-watering figures being paid out would be hard to justify in the good times. But when the economy is stagnating they are a slap in the face for families struggling to make ends meet”, Sinclair added.

The bill for bonuses was recorded at £25million for the fiscal year 2010/11, but the figure was reduced to £10million in the last financial year.
