Story Code : 192907
Self-immolation due to extreme poverty in Gaza
Eighteen year old Ahab Abu Nada lived in Gaza’s impoverished Shati refugee camp in a small run-down house. His father said Ahab was depressed because he couldn’t find a job to provide food for the family.

The Abu Nada's a family of ten, live in a 55 square meter house where the kitchen also serves as the bathroom. Family and neighbors come to condole the bereaved father who is still in shock.

Gaza is a small strip of land and has been under a sea, land and air blockade by Israel for over five years. This has contributed to the high unemployment and poverty rate among its young population.

Civil society organizations are appealing to the international community to help the youth in Gaza. OXFAM an international organization who provides aid to impoverished Gazans had this to say in reaction to Abu Nada’s self-immolation…

The bereaved family says it hopes the death of the son would attract world attention to the hardships in Gaza.
