6 Sep 2012 10:08

Islam Times - At least 25 Turkish troops have been killed in an explosion that rocked an ammunition depot in western Turkey.

The Turkish army announced in a Thursday statement that four soldiers were also wounded in the explosion that took place in the city of Afyonkarahisar at about 09:15 p.m. local time (1815 GMT) on Wednesday.

The statement did not reveal the reason behind the incident that caused a fire in the depot where hand grenades were stored.

Turkish authorities rejected any act of terrorism or sabotage in the explosion.

“This is most probably an accident,” said Environment and Forestry Minister Veysel Eroglu.

“This is certainly not an act of terrorism.”

On September 3, ten Turkish soldiers were killed and several others wounded in fighting between the army and the members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the southeastern province of Sirnak.

Clashes between the Turkish army and the PKK have intensified in recent months.
