Iran foreign minister meets with Syrian president in Damascus

During the meeting on Wednesday which was held in the Syrian capital Damascus, the two sides discussed bilateral, regional and international issues as well as the Syrian crisis.

Expressing gratitude to Iran for its honest efforts to solve Syria’s problem, Assad noted that Damascus welcomes any balanced, fair and reasonable plan or solution which would serve the interests of the Syrian nation.

The Iranian foreign minister stressed that security and peace will be restored in Syria via a “diplomatic Syria-Syria solution” which is based on national talks between the Syrian government and the opposition without any foreign intervention and arming of the extremist groups as well as by putting an end to violence.

Earlier on Wednesday, Salehi also held talks with his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Moallem.

    During the meeting, Salehi stressed that the Islamic Republic’s stance on the Syrian issue seeks to resolve the crisis which has been imposed on the Arab country by promoting dialogue between government and the opposition and providing the necessary grounds for the facilitation of reforms and meeting the people’s demands.


Salehi also expressed Iran's readiness to promote mutual cooperation between the two countries to alleviate the Syrian people’s sufferings and improve their living conditions.

The Syrian foreign minister, for his part, expressed satisfaction over the Iranian foreign minister’s visit to Syria, describing Tehran-Damascus ties as strategic.

Moallem added that the enemies of Damascus have spared no efforts to import extremist forces and arms to Syria in order to kill the people, create insecurity, and destroy the country’s infrastructures.

Heading a delegation, Salehi arrived in Damascus on Wednesday and was welcomed by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmad Arnous and Iran's Ambassador to Damascus Mohammad-Reza Raouf Sheibani.
