Syrian insurgent commander gives up fighting against govt.

27 Sep 2012 08:34

Islam Times - A commander of Syrian foreign-sponsored insurgents has decided to give up violence and stop fighting government forces.

Informed sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Captain Khaled Abdel Rahman al-Zamel renounced terrorist activities on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, four Syrian security forces were killed and 14 others injured on Wednesday after twin bombings targeted the military command building in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The brazen blasts took place with an interval of 10 minutes and caused material damages to buildings and cars nearby.

The assaults left scenes of destruction and shouldering fire followed by clashes between the Syrian Army soldiers and foreign-sponsored insurgents, who tried to storm the military headquarters.

Hours later, Maya Naser, a correspondent for Iran's Press TV network, was killed by a sniper while reporting on air in Damascus.

Hosein Mortada, who serves as Damascus bureau chief for both the English-language Press TV and Arabic-language Al-Alam news networks, was wounded in the same attack.

The pair covered the aftermath of twin massive explosions that hit a military complex in Damascus.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence, while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals.
