Egyptians march in Cairo to condemn officials behind Maspero massacre

10 Oct 2012 09:47

Islam Times - Thousands of Egyptians have marched in the Egyptian capital Cairo, demanding retribution against those responsible for the deaths of nearly 30 people killed in Maspero clashes last year.

The demonstrators, who carried pictures of those who died, called for the execution of Marshal Hussein Tantawi near the headquarters of Egyptian state TV on the first anniversary of the military crackdown on Tuesday.

The Coptic Christian and Muslim protestors demanded Marshal Hussein Tantawi, along with other people behind the massacre, to be put to trial.

“As long as we don’t get justice, the goals of the revolution are never going to succeed … As long as the people working under an oppressive regime do not get punished and are not held accountable, they will continue to do exactly the same thing,” one of the protestors said.

"Either we get justice, or we die like them," they sang, holding portraits of those behind the massacre and waving flags.

The demonstration was organized by Shabab Maspero, a group of Coptic Christian youth activists.

In October 2011, thousands of people, predominately Coptic Christians, staged a demonstration, slamming the demolition of a church in the southern province of Aswan.

The peaceful protesters were violently attacked by security forces and the army, resulting in 28 deaths and 212 injuries.
