Danish newspaper gives activist Abd Al-Hadi Al-Khawaja the Freedom Award
Al-Khawaja, who holds both Bahraini and Danish citizenship, was sentenced earlier this year by Bahrain regime, having been accused of inciting violence. Decrying such injustice al-Khawaja went on hunger strike for 110 days in May 2011.

 Denmark's Foreign Minister Filly Sovindal welcomed the announcement, stressing al-Khawaja “greatly contributed to improving basic human rights in Bahrain, forcing the regime through his action to pay attention.”

With the award, al-Khawaja will receive 100,000 Kronor - $17,400 – The Freedom award was created in 2007.

Al-Khawaja's daughter Mariem, which runs Bahrain Center for Human Rights, will receive the Prize award on her father’s behalf in a ceremony scheduled October 29.
