Russian reaction to US presidential election

8 Nov 2012 09:05

Islam Times - Russia has welcomed the news of Barack Obama's victory in the US Presidential election. Moscow hopes that Obama's re-election will have a positive impact on relations between the two countries.

The US/Russian relations were a hot debate during the election campaign. Mitt Romney famously called Russia 'America's number one geopolitical foe'. However, Obama was behind the 'reset' of relations between the two countries during his first term.

The US Ambassador in Russia, Michael McFaul, says that the US will continue pursuing its existing strategy towards Russia. Experts agree that Washington will stick to its established policy when it comes to its former Cold War enemy.

The Russian President congratulated Obama on securing the second term of his presidency and invited him to visit Russia next year. The Russian Prime Minister has also joined in the gratters on his twitter page.

The US Presidential elections were monitored closely by politicians and experts in Russia. Moscow saw Barack Obama as an understandable partner while it was wary of Mitt Romney, especially after his anti-Russian remarks.

The relations between the Kremlin and the White House remain strained over many issues, but Russia says its open to co-operation.
