Pakistan-Afghanistan border closed after torture of Pakistani drivers

30 Dec 2012 05:48

Islam Times - Torkham check post at the Pakistani-Afghani border was closed on Friday after truck drivers complained of the alleged torture of two of their Pakistani colleagues by the hands of Afghan officials.

They took their protest to the streets, blocking the road, the media reported.

Two truck drivers were heading to Afghanistan for work when they were intercepted by Afghan security personnel at a check post and subjected to torture, a source told the daily Dawn.
The Afghan personnel also reportedly tore up the drivers’ passports along with other travel documents.

The ‘tortured’ Pakistanis returned to the Pak-Afghan border where they were joined by other truck drivers to demonstrate their anger.

Drivers have complained Afghan security personnel routinely harassed and tortured job-seekers throughout Afghanistan.
A similar incident occurred on Dec 22 when 29 Pakistani labourers revealed they had been tortured.

The Torkham border gate with Afghanistan was reopened the same day after an assurance from Afghan authorities that actions would be taken against personnel involved in the mistreatment of Pakistani labourers and that such incidents would be avoided in the future.
