Russian deputy FM says Moscow backs stability in Lebanon

26 Apr 2013 20:58

Islam Times - Russia’s deputy foreign minister says Moscow supports stability and security in Lebanon amid the complicated situation in the region.

“We are always building our relations on the basis of enhancing security and stability in Lebanon and constantly strengthening the country’s independence, sovereignty, and integrity of territories,” Mikhail Bogdanov said during his visit to Lebanon on Thursday.

The Russian official further stressed the need for the expansion of bilateral ties between Russia and Lebanon in different fields.

Bogdanov is expected to hold talks with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati and Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam later on Friday.

An unnamed Russian diplomat told Lebanon’s Daily Star that, “Bogdanov’s talks with Lebanese leaders will center on the situation in the region, the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Lebanon and Lebanese-Russian relations.”

“The primary aim of Bogdanov’s visit is to exchange views with Lebanese officials on the situation in Lebanon and the crisis in Syria,” the source stated.

On April 24, the Lebanese president said authorities must not allow the flow of weapons and militants into Syria through Lebanon’s border.

Over the past months, the foreign-sponsored militant groups have made several attempts to infiltrate into Syria through Lebanon’s border.

Damascus has called on Beirut to stop the flow of arms and militants into Syria, which has witnessed nearly two years of deadly unrest since March 2011.
