Teachers in Pakistani Balochistan refuse election duties

28 Apr 2013 12:47

Islam Times - The Association of Government Teachers (BGAT) in Pakistani Balochistan has refused to perform its election duties following threats by banned militant organizations.

The BGAT has sent a letter to the provincial governor and Balochistan’s interim chief minister on looming threats to the lives of teachers during the elections in the province.

The letter noted that teachers continue to receive threats in 11 districts of the province, including Kalat, Mastung, Kech, Khuzdar, Noshki and other districts.

The association mentioned that in light of such situation the teachers would be unable to perform their election duties.

This refusal has come two days after the killing of a senior teacher in Balochistan’s Turbat region. Baloch separatists have warned teachers to stay away from the elections.

Pakistani Balochistan has witnessing ethnic and sectarian violence in recent years.
The province is facing insurgency after the assassination of Baloch Nationalist leader Akbar Bugti in 2006.
