Iran congratulates Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on election victory
In a Sunday statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Araqchi congratulated former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who heads the PML-N, and the Pakistani nation on the party’s victory.

Pointing to the high turnout in the elections, Araqchi welcomed a legal power transition in the country.

The Iranian official referred to the brotherly relations between the Islamic Republic and Pakistan, expressing hope that bilateral ties would further develop.

Sharif declared victory for his center-right party on Saturday, saying, “Results are still coming in, but this much is confirmed: we’re the single largest party so far.”

Pakistan Muslim League-N has attained an overwhelming lead in the polls with 130 out of the 272 directly elected seats in the National Assembly. The first runner up is Imran Khan`s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf with 37 seats.

An additional 70 seats - 60 for women and 10 for non-Muslims - will be allocated on the basis of a party’s share in the directly elected seats. About 86 million people were eligible to vote in the elections.

According to Pakistani Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin Ebrahim, turnout was about 60 percent, which is the highest since 1977.
