Coalition partner censures German Chancellor Angela Merkel
Philipp Roesler of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag on Sunday that promises by Merkel’s Christian Democrats Union (CDU) must be economically reasonable.

“I urgently advise staying in the realm of economic sense. Social policy promises like those now being proposed by the CDU have to be financially feasible,” Roesler stated.

Tax breaks for families and more funds for infrastructure are some of the proposed spending promises, which would reportedly cost 28 billion euros (about $37 billion).

Roesler’s criticism comes three days after opposition leader Juergen Trittin from the Greens condemned Merkel’s proposals as “election gifts” to woo voters to the CDU.

Merkel has tried to woo voters during her eight years in power through issues such as abandoning military conscription.

Lawmaker Carsten Schneider with the Social Democrats also commented on the topic saying plans to increase domestic spending while lecturing Europe about budgets means “she has lost credibility for good.”

National elections in Germany are set for September 22, when nearly 600 members are to be elected for the federal parliament.
