Egypt MPs stand in fear of the military junta

16 Sep 2014 07:09

Islam Times - Although the goal of any parliament in a democratic system is to ensure that the will of the people will be fairly expressed and represented MPs in Egypt have been de facto gagged by the military junta.

Faced with a system more tyrannical than it is democratic, Egypt parliament will soon become a tool of the executive, in complete negation of the constitution.

Ever since Gen. Abdel Fattah El Sisi has taken over the reign of powers MPs have lived in fear of repression. Even though MPs benefit from immunity in order to ensure their independence from the executive, realities on the ground have proven to be completely in opposition with the law.

As a new parliament stand to be nominated, the military junta is quite simply closing in on Egypt’s republic, removing the last vestige of an already ailing democratic system.

Under the new regime, freedom of expression and political freedom have been completely and utterly crushed under the boot of the military.

Five MPs of the Freedom and Justice Party have already been taken before the Criminal Court on terror charges.

Saad Al Khalifa, Dr. Syed Rafat Abed, Ahmed Mahmoud Ahmed Eid and Ahmed Radwan all have been charged with giving orders to kill, and incitement to practice violence, and attacks on security forces in Suez. They were also accused of burning down public and private buildings in Suez. "
