Abducted US journalist killed in Yemen: Official

The US President Barack Obama on Saturday confirmed his death adding "The United States strongly condemns the barbaric murder of Luke Somers at the hands of Al-Qaeda terrorists during a rescue operation."
 
Yemeni officials had previously confirmed Somers’ death.
 
"The American hostage Somers was killed", a senior Yemeni security official speaking on condition of anonymity said in a Saturday interview without providing further details.
 
US Special Operation forces launched the rescue operation along with Yemeni soldiers in the eastern province of Hadramawt.
 
In a recent three-minute video obtained by a US terrorism monitoring group, an al-Qaeda member said that Somers would meet his “inevitable fate” if Washington failed to meet the group’s demands, without specifying what the demands were.
