“Macau will have a better future as long as we fully understand and implement the principles of 'one country, two systems' policy,” said Xi Jinping during his visit to Macau on Saturday.

"One country, two systems" refers to Beijing’s policy with regard to Macau and Hong Kong, which serve as the two Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China.

“To continue to push forward the cause of 'one country, two systems' is a shared mission for the central government, special administrative region governments and Chinese people of all nationalities, including compatriots in Hong Kong and Macau,” the Chinese president added.

Xi is currently in Macau to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the region’s integration into China and attend the sworn-in ceremony of the region’s newly-appointed chief.

Macau was formerly a Portuguese colony; however, its sovereignty was transferred back to China in 1999.

Xi’s warning against foreign meddling in Macau came after Beijing blamed foreign countries for backing anti-government protests in China’s other administrative region, Hong Kong.

Since late September, Hong Kong has been the scene of demonstrations against an election law introduced by the Chinese government under which the people of Hong Kong will have to elect their next leader from a list of Beijing-vetted candidates in 2017.
