FBI recommends felony charges against ex-CIA chief
Prosecutors from the US Justice Department and FBI have recommended filing charges against David Petraeus over the leakage of confidential information during his tenure as the CIA director, the Times reported on Friday.

Petraeus is said to have passed on the documents to American writer Paula Broadwell, who was working on his biography, and given her access to his CIA email account.

Petraeus resigned from the CIA after his extramarital affair with Broadwell was accidentally exposed in 2012, which he said was due to his "extremely poor judgment."

The affair came to light after the FBI launched an investigation over an email sent by Petraeus to his mistress which they mistook as a reference to corruption.

The FBI then discovered the affair between the 60-year-old general and his 40-year-old biographer.

Petraeus was appointed director of the CIA in September 2011, after serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan as the head of US-led forces in the country, with the formal title commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). He was also the commander of US forces in Iraq.

The retired general played vital roles in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars during his military career. Petraeus was responsible for training Iraqi forces during the US occupation.

He was accused of ordering the intentional drone bombing of funerals and other civilian targets in Afghanistan, a war crime under the International Criminal Court.

The former four-star general has been a supporter of a military strike against Syria.
