US police arrest anti-torture protesters in front of Cheney’s home

11 Jan 2015 12:17

Islam Times - Police have arrested two people who were among demonstrators standing in front of the home of former US vice president Dick Cheney to protest the 14th anniversary of the opening of the Guantanamo prison.

The demonstration was held in McLean, Virginia, on Saturday, Reuters reported.

The rally was organized by the anti-war group Code Pink.

The 57-year-old Tighe Barry and the 83-year-old Eve Tetaz, both of them from Washington DC, were arrested on Saturday.

Fairfax County police spokesman Roger Henriquez said the two protesters were arrested on trespassing charges. They face misdemeanor charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Another demonstration was held outside the home of CIA Director John Brennan in McLean.

In 2013, Tighe Barry was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for criticizing the CIA drone strikes. "What about the children that are being killed by so-called targeted drone strikes?" he asked at the time.

In December, the Senate released the executive summary of a report about the CIA torture program, saying the agency misled the public about torturing prisoners following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

According to the report, the CIA acted more brutally and pervasively than it acknowledged.

Cheney has repeatedly defended the torture program and said he would authorize it again.

The Guantanamo prison, where many of the terror suspects have been held without a charge or trial, was opened in January 2002.
